Your Guide to Calls-to-Action (CTAs) for Social Media

Educational Newsletters

Calls to Action (CTAs) have existed on company websites for years now – you know, those “Click Here” and “Register Now” buttons that guide customers to, well, take action! On social media, CTAs are especially important to monetize your feeds and spark engagement, but we often miss these opportunities. So, how can you take advantage of these powerful little things?

1. Using CTAs to Increase Your Social Media Engagement

Social media CTAs aren’t only important for sales – they can also help drive engagements on your posts, which get your followers talking and interacting. After all, social media is meant to be social.

For instance, a plastic surgery practice may ask a question like, “Can you guess the # of cc’s in this breast implant being used for today’s surgery?” or, “What type of implants do you think I used here? Silicone or saline?”

A restaurant may ask, “Our specials this week are a spicy BBQ beef sandwich and chicken alfredo pizza… which will you be having?”

On a special occasion you might ask, “Join us in the comments below by leaving your birthday wishes to Jason, our Sr. Partner here at Bob ‘n’ Jason’s Law Firm.”

The key is to capture as many likes and comments as possible to increase your social performance. Insider tip: the simpler the question, the easier it is to drive engagement.

2. Using CTAs to Get More Direct Messages

Remind followers that you’re just one DM away, so don’t hesitate to reach out. A personable tone will be more effective for this type of CTA.

For example, go with, “DM me to schedule a consultation” or “DM us if you have any questions about our packages.” vs. “book an appointment now.” (Remember: the goal is to sound more like a real person and less like an advertisement.)

3. A Tip to Help Drive Traffic to Your Website

While your social media is no doubt a bustling hub of interaction with your potential and current clients, your website often drives more conversions (i.e., filling out a contact form or calling your business) and while social media algorithms slowly crush your visibility, if you can capture patient contact info, you can market to them over email for years to come. You may think your followers already know to go to your website for more info, but research shows that using a CTA greatly increases the chances of making this happen. It’s as simple as saying, “Visit our website for more info (link in bio).” or “Want to learn more? Head to our website!”

4. And a Few More Tips to Utilize CTAs like a Pro…

    – CTAs don’t always need to be at the end of your captions. Afterall, captions are minimized on Instagram after 125 characters (not words!), so it can be beneficial to get those CTAs in early. Grab your followers’ attention and drive action by starting a post with something like, “Tell me about your weekend using emojis only😃.”

    – Double your effectiveness by asking followers to tag their friends in your posts! This will generate engagement with current followers and drive new users to your posts. Why? Because even if these friends aren’t followers yet, they will still receive a tag notification and will likely click on your post as a result. Heck, they might even turn around and tag a friend of their own! It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

    – Sometimes the purpose of a CTA should be to keep people on your posts longer (which the algorithm loves). Capture your followers’ attention with a funny video and say, “Stop what you’re doing and watch this fun video!” Or remind followers to scroll through a carousel post of photos by saying, “Swipe to see more.”
